We want something recognisable but not overused is something I hear at least once a week. So I travelled back to when babies were named Myrtle and Horace without a second thought and Oakley wasn’t even on the radar.

Here are the rarest baby names registered in New Zealand from 1900 to 1909.

Neglected, a little dusty or aged with the golden glow from yesteryear.

I’ve collated the final 10 recorded names for both boys and girls during the 1900s for you. And hey you may be surprised at how relevant some of these sleepers are today.

There will naturally be some double ups as names have a tendency to bubble away where they are before they rise, shuffle or slip into oblivion. So where that has happened, I have included the next lowest ranked name(s).
